American Airlines is increasing the cost of checked baggage
On Tuesday, the airline announced an increase in the price of the first checked bag on most flights. For customers who didn't prepay online, the cost rises to $40, whereas it remains at $35 if paid online during check-in. This marks up to a 33% increase from the previous rate on American Airlines, which was $30 for both methods.
The price hike affects flights within and between the United States, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. American Airlines has also raised the price of a second checked bag to $45, up from $40.
Moreover, other routes are subject to price increases as well. Checked-baggage fees for flights to and from the US to Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America destinations now stand at $35, increased from $30, while the second checked bag fee rises to $45 from $40.
These changes take effect for flights booked starting Tuesday. Passengers who purchased tickets before this date will pay the previous prices. However, passengers with an airline-branded credit card, those purchasing tickets in premium cabins, or passengers with status are largely exempt from these price increases.
