British boxer Sherif Lawal dies after collapsing in professional debut
British boxer Sherif Lawal passed away after collapsing in the ring during his inaugural professional fight on Sunday.
According to Warren Boxing Management, the match promoter, Lawal was participating in his debut bout at the Harrow Leisure Centre in a suburb northwest of London when the tragic incident unfolded. The company expressed its sympathies to Lawal's loved ones in a statement shared on social media.
Reports from the media indicated that Lawal, aged 29, was struck on the temple during the fourth round of a scheduled six-round match against his opponent Malam Varela at London's Harrow Leisure Centre.
"Unfortunately during Sherif's fight, he collapsed and despite the best efforts of the paramedics, he was later pronounced dead," promoters Warren Boxing Management said in a statement.
On Monday, the British Boxing Board of Control conveyed its condolences.
