Jake Paul wins his fight against Mike Tyson by unanimous decision
On Friday night in Arlington, Texas, social media influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul upset former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson by unanimous decision in their eagerly awaited professional fight.
As the sixth boxer in his career to defeat the former heavyweight champion, Paul dominated the majority of the bout against Tyson, winning by unanimous decision in front of 72,300 spectators at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Despite Tyson being a huge fan favorite, the bout demonstrated that "Father Time" is still unbeaten. During the eight-round, two-minute bout, Paul barraged Tyson with jabs and won by unanimous decision, making it difficult for Tyson to mount any kind of meaningful attack.
Tyson struck Paul in the face during the final stare-down on Thursday after Paul stomped on his foot. Tyson's biggest blow turned out to be that one. The judges gave Paul scores of 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73.
After losing to Kevin McBride on June 11, 2005, Tyson, at 58, made his professional ring comeback. Tyson's performance against Roy Jones Jr. in the 2020 exhibition had been impressive, which paved the way for a fight with Paul.
Tyson (50-7, 44 KOs, 2 NCs) wore a knee brace that limited his range of motion and lacked his trademark explosiveness.
The July 20 bout between Paul, 27, and Tyson was originally scheduled to take place, but it was postponed after the former heavyweight champion was forced to miss the bout due to an ulcer flare-up while traveling. Paul chose to fight Mike Perry, a former UFC fighter and current BKFC combatant, instead of waiting, and he won via TKO in the sixth round.
The first several rounds were somewhat mild as the two boxers adjusted to one another's fighting techniques.
The 31-year-old Tyson was not knocked out by Paul. Paul, on the other hand, frequently blasted Tyson with the jab while moving laterally. Although there was no threat to either opponent, Paul maintained his composure and won.
With the win, Paul strengthens his position as a legitimate competitor in the sport and advances to 11-1 in his professional career, including seven knockouts.
“First and foremost Mike Tyson, it’s such an honor,” Paul told Tyson after the match. “He’s the G.O.A.T. I look up to him, I’m inspired by him, and we wouldn’t be here today without him. This man is an icon and it’s just an honor to be able to fight him.”
After the bout, a question was posed to Tyson about whether he thought he had shown the world that, despite his advanced age, he could fight long.
“I didn’t prove nothing to anybody only to myself. I’m not one of those guys that looks to please the world. I’m just happy with what I can do,” Tyson said.
