Men's marathon world record broken in Chicago by Kelvin Kiptum

Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya set the men's marathon world record in Chicago on Sunday, finishing in 2:00:35.

In only his third competitive marathon, the 23-year-old cut 34 seconds off the world record held by his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge, though World Athletics says it is still subject to ratification.

He finished nearly three and a half minutes ahead of Kenya's Benson Kipruto and Belgium's Bashi Abdi.

At 1:00:48, he was outside world record pace at halfway but accelerated 10 kilometers from the finish to seal his place in history.

Kiptum could have achieved this result after running the fastest marathon debut last December and setting a course record in London in April 16 seconds outside Kipchoge's world record.

Sifan Hassan, making her US marathon debut, broke the women's course record in Chicago with a 2:13:38, the second-fastest ever.

Swiss athletes Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner set course records in the men's and women's wheelchair races.
