WNBA reports that a new franchise will be added to the Bay Area
On Thursday, the WNBA revealed the addition of a new expansion team in the Bay Area. Starting in 2025, the team that hasn't been named will hold its headquarters in Oakland, California, and play its home games at San Francisco's Chase Center.
The NBA's Golden State Warriors co-executive chairman and CEO Joe Lacob, along with co-executive chairman Peter Guber, will own and run the franchise in the Bay Area.
When Atlanta was given a franchise in 2007, the WNBA underwent its final expansion. The Dream opened for performances the next year.
Games began in 1997, but the league was established in 1996.
The New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces will play each other in the WNBA Finals beginning on Sunday. This is the most recent announcement.
