An attack in Poland left an American basketball player with an injured eye socket

According to officials and reports in Polish media on Sunday, an American basketball player who plays professionally for a women's club in Poland was attacked during the middle of the week, resulting in a head injury. The attacker was later taken into custody.

The RMF FM broadcaster reported that Mikayla Cowling, a player for VBW Arka Gdynia, was attacked late on Wednesday in a music club in Gdansk, a city in northern Poland. The club was quoted as saying that the “brutal beating” left Cowling with multiple injuries, including a fractured eye socket.

Following a EuroCup women's match in which the Gdynia team defeated their Swiss rivals, BCF Elfic Fribourg, 77-47, an attack took place. Cowling, a basketball player for Cal University, finished with seven points.

In an interview with the Polish state news agency PAP, Boguslaw Witkowski, the president of the Gdynia club, claimed that a security guard had attacked the player close to the women's restroom.

The 27-year-old Cowling was kicked as well as struck on the head multiple times when she fell. He said that the athlete had an orbital bone fracture and that her face was the most seriously injured. He continued by saying that she is being watched at home and will get more testing the following week.

A police spokesperson was also cited by PAP as saying that the 48-year-old attacker was taken into custody on Friday.
