Adam Johnson, an American hockey player, died after being slashed in the neck by a skate

A skate blade sliced Adam Johnson's neck during a game in England on Saturday, killing him. Johnson played 13 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2019 and 2020. Aged 29.

Johnson got a skate cut in the second period of a Sheffield Steelers-Nottingham Panthers Challenge Cup game at Sheffield's Utilita Arena.

Sunday, the Nottingham Panthers announced that Adam Johnson died in a freak accident at the Sheffield game last night.

The Panthers offer their condolences to Adam's family, partner, and friends during this terrible time. Adams' death saddens the club's players, staff, administration, and ownership.

Minnesota native Johnson played 13 NHL games for Pittsburgh in 2018-19 and 2019-20 before joining the Malmo Redhawks in 2020-21. Penguins' scorer had three assists.

“The Pittsburgh Penguins join the entire hockey world in mourning the life of Adam Johnson, whose life tragically ended far too soon,” the Penguins said Sunday. Our thoughts and prayers are with Adam's family, friends, teammates, and coaches. Adam will always be a Penguin.”

Johnson played hockey for Minnesota-Duluth in two NCAA Tournaments. He earned Minnesota-Duluth a spot in the Frozen Four by beating Boston University in overtime in 2017.

After three AHL seasons and 2022-23 with the Augsburger Panther, he joined Nottingham for this season.

Johnson's death forced the league to postpone all three Sunday games in Belfast, Fife, and Guildford. Also postponed was Nottingham's Tuesday game.
