Wayne Rooney named Birmingham City manager, part-owned by Tom Brady

Football icon Wayne Rooney has been named Birmingham City's next manager. NFL legend Tom Brady owns a minority share in the English team.

Rooney resigned from his post at Major League Soccer (MLS) team D.C. United on Sunday by mutual consent, but he immediately returned to the managerial spotlight to work with the legendary NFL player.

Brady was appointed chairman of a new advisory board and entered into a partnership to become a minority owner of Birmingham City earlier this year.

Rooney will have the responsibility of propelling his new squad back to the top of the English Premier League, since the team presently competes in the second tier of British soccer.

Along with some of his old United teammates, including Ashley Cole and John O'Shea, who will make up his backroom staff, the former England and Manchester United striker signed a three-and-a-half year contract.

John Eustace, the previous manager of Birmingham, was fired on Monday after just 15 months in the position.

Just inside the playoff spots, the squad is now at sixth in the standings.

After stints at Derby County and DC United, this will be Rooney's third managerial post. It will also be the club's first hire under the new ownership group of Birmingham City.
