Neymar exits in tears with left knee injury; team doctor says seriousness uncertain
After Brazil's 2-0 World Cup qualifying loss to Uruguay on Tuesday, Neymar was overcome with emotion as he departed the field due to a left knee injury.
At the Centenario Stadium, the 31-year-old attacker stumbled and collapsed during a run in the 44th minute. Players from both sides approached him as he grasped his knee.
Neymar's face was covered with both hands as he was taken off on a stretcher. In his stead entered Richarlison.
Neymar departed the arena on crutches. Reporters were informed by Brazil's physician Rodrigo Lasmar that it was too soon to assess the extent of Neymar's injury.
"All of the tests were completed, and tomorrow we shall retake them. The next 24 hours will be crucial in determining how his knee reacts, how swollen it gets, and what the imaging will reveal, according to Lasmar. "Let's wait calmly for the exams, assess calmly, and let you know as soon as we have a diagnosis."
When Neymar was injured, Uruguay was up 1-0. Following that, Brazil lost its first World Cup qualifying encounter in 37 games.
