A 7.0-magnitude earthquake rattled Northern California

According to the US Geological Survey, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Northern California on Thursday morning, approximately 40 miles west of the town of Petrolia.

The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for portions of the Oregon and California coastline.

According to a Federal Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman on social media, Administrator Deanne Criswell has been informed about the 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Northern California that has triggered tsunami warnings.

“Please listen to local officials and heed their warnings,” FEMA spokesperson Jaclyn Rothenberg wrote on social media.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake's epicenter was located over the Pacific Ocean, around 50 miles southwest of Eureka, California. The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for portions of the Oregon and California coastline.

Minutes later, the USGS reports a large apparent aftershock that recorded as a 5.8-magnitude earthquake near Cobb, California in Lake County.

People in the Central Valley and along the coast of Northern California reported feeling shaky.

In the past ten minutes, there have been at least six aftershocks, including one with a magnitude of 4.2 close to Petrolia, California.

There have been at least a dozen aftershocks since the first 7.0-magnitude earthquake at 10:44 a.m. PT.
