The death toll from the Eaton and Palisades fires climbs to 16
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said Saturday that the death toll from the Eaton and Palisades fires had risen to 16, with the figure projected to rise further.
According to the office's records, five of the deaths appear to have been caused by the Palisades Fire, while 11 were caused by the Eaton Fire.
The medical examiner recorded 16 instances, 10 of which had verified human remains.
During a respite in the winds on Saturday, firefighters are attacking the flames with all available aviation resources. Winds will increase to moderate levels tonight, with a wind event expected early next week.
The Palisades Fire raged on Saturday, destroying houses in Mandeville Canyon, and evacuation orders were issued for areas of Brentwood as well as the hills of Encino and Tarzana.
The Palisades Fire, the biggest in the area, reached around 22,660 acres at midday with an 11% containment rate.
The Eaton Fire northeast of Los Angeles reached 14,100 acres with 15% containment early Saturday.
More than 12,000 structures remain under threat, with more than 100,000 people evacuated from evacuation zones.
