The US Secret Service shot an adult man near the White House in Washington, D.C., soon after midnight on Sunday during a "armed confrontation" with law enforcement, according to the agency.

The interaction occurred near the junction of 17th and F Streets NW.

President Donald Trump was not in the White House on Sunday morning.

According to Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi, USSS got information about a "suicidal individual" who was on his way to DC from Indiana. Guglielmi said in a statement that USSS officers observed a person matching the description near the White House and discovered their parked automobile.

“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel,” Guglielmi said.

The victim was brought to the hospital, but his condition is unclear.

According to the statement, no injuries were reported among Secret Service officers, and the event is being investigated.

On March 8, DC Metropolitan police issued a "BOLO" after receiving information from police in North Manchester, Indiana about a 27-year-old man heading to the Washington, DC area who may be armed, mentally unstable, and potentially attempting suicide by policeman, according to several law enforcement sources.

Officers found the man on foot just outside the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and about a block from the White House, the sources said. According to law enforcement authorities informed on the situation, the police engaged the guy who aimed the pistol at himself, resisted demands to drop the weapon, then turned the gun onto Secret Service agents and officers. Officers then fired an undisclosed number of bullets. According to the people briefed, the automobile also contained an extra weapon, a rifle.

The DC Metropolitan Police's Internal Affairs Division Force Investigations Team will lead the investigation into the event, according to Guglielmi, since they are the principal agency in charge of officer-involved shootings in the District of Columbia.
