Train hits car crossing railroad tracks in Florida, killing 6, including 3 children

Six people, including three children, died when a train hit a car crossing railroad tracks in Hillsborough County, Florida, on Saturday evening.

A train collided with an SUV group on its way to a quinceañera over the railroad tracks about 6:45 p.m. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office reported four men and three women, including children, in the car.

Chronister said a stop sign encourages drivers to stop and look both ways at the railroad crossing, which is not particularly busy.

Deputies and other first responders responded to an accident near Jim Lefler Circle and U.S. Route 92 in Plant City.

"This SUV looks like a crushed soda can. The sight is awful "Chronister exclaimed.

Five occupants were “violently ejected from the SUV” and died on scene.

The victims were rear seat passengers Julian Hernandez, 9, Jakub Lopez, 17, Alyssa Hernandez, 17, Anaelia Hernandez, 22, and Enedelia Hernandez, 50.

The driver and a front-seat passenger were removed by first responders using the Jaws of Life. Jose Hernandez, 52, the driver, died overnight in the hospital.

The condition of the passenger in the front seat is still critical.

All seven passengers were supposed to be from Plant City, but their relationship was unknown.
