DMV services are disrupted countrywide due to system outage
Several states encountered service disruptions at department of motor vehicles (DMV) offices on Thursday, attributed to a "national outage".
According to the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), a non-governmental organization responsible for providing software to DMV offices, the network facilitating connectivity among motor vehicle agencies across the United States, as well as various verification services, experienced an outage due to cloud connectivity issues on Thursday.
The outage persisted from 9:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EDT, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the AAMVA.
"During that time, there was no ability to process messages that support transactions of driver licenses and motor vehicle titles. This prevented a number of motor vehicle agencies from issuing driver licenses and vehicle titles during the outage," the AAMVA said, noting it was working internally and with cloud providers to determine the "root cause" of the outage.
AAMVA further stated that connectivity had been restored to nearly all states by 2 p.m. EDT, clarifying that the disruption was solely related to connectivity and not software-related.
DMV offices nationwide utilized social media platforms to alert local residents about the outage on Thursday.
