In a North Carolina home siege, four officers were shot and killed, and four were injured
Authorities said one deputy US Marshal and two local task force officers were shot and murdered while serving a warrant at a Charlotte, North Carolina, house.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings announced at a Monday night news conference that eight policemen were shot. He called the incident “the most tragic one” of his 32-year law enforcement career.
Jennings said the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force was serving a warrant for a convicted felon's handgun possession in the 5000 block of Galway Drive when the gunshot occurred.
The officers returned fire after being shot with a “high-powered rifle” in the front yard, killing a suspect. Jennings stated that US Marshals were serving the warrant to that subject.
“As officers approached, they received additional gunfire from inside the residence,” the police chief said.
The police chief said four Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were shot, including one “fighting for his life” in the hospital. The other officers are stable, he said.
Police said Monday night that Joshua Eyer, an injured officer, had died.
“Officer Joshua Eyer was one of the CMPD officers shot in the line of duty this afternoon,” Jennings said on X. “He fought for several hours and passed away from his injuries with his wife and family by his side tonight. Officer Eyer was 6-year veteran with the CMPD, and I am truly grateful for his bravery, service and ultimate sacrifice. He will never be forgotten, and we are forever indebted.”
Jennings said police are questioning two “people of interest”. Jennings said a 17-year-old and a woman emerged after officials evacuated the house, but he could not confirm their identities.
“We are very early in the investigation,” he said. “CMPD will lead this investigation, we still have a lot to uncover, a lot of questions that are not answered right now.”
