Several people, including at least one child, were shot after an individual opened fire at a splash pad park in Michigan on Saturday afternoon, police report.

According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, nine to ten victims were injured during the incident at Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills and were taken to various hospitals with different types of injuries.

Sheriff Bouchard mentioned that while details on the extent of the injuries were limited, he knew that at least one victim had successfully undergone surgery.

Rochester Hills is located approximately 27 miles north of Detroit.

Sheriff Bouchard indicated that the shooting seemed to be random based on preliminary information. He detailed that the suspect alighted from a vehicle, began shooting at the splash pad, reloaded, fired again, and then fled the scene.

During the press briefing, Sheriff Bouchard revealed that the suspect is believed to have fired around 28 shots and was now confined to a house near the incident location.

A semi-automatic handgun and three magazines were recovered at the scene. The individual suspected of the shooting is believed to be inside a house within a half-mile radius of the crime scene, which is currently encircled by law enforcement.

Although it is suspected that there might be more weapons inside the home, it remains uncertain whether the suspect has access to them. Authorities are deploying additional resources, including SWAT teams and armored vehicles, to support the ongoing police operation, as stated by Bouchard.

“We are trying to talk to that person without response but we, again, believe he is contained there,” he said. “… We are in the process of getting a search warrant for that address.”
