Josh Kruger, a journalist and activist from Philadelphia, was shot and killed at home
Josh Kruger, a journalist and advocate from Philadelphia, was shot and killed early on Monday morning at his residence, according to the police.
According to a police statement, no weapons have been found and no one has been taken into custody.
At approximately 1:28 a.m., Kruger, 39, was shot seven times in the chest and abdomen at his Point Breeze residence, according to the police. After being declared dead, he left the hospital.
Most recently, Kruger was employed by The Philadelphia Citizen and The Philadelphia Inquirer as a journalist, where she covered topics including HIV and addiction, homelessness, and LGBTQ+ rights. His most recent piece paid homage to Temple University's late president JoAnne Epps, who passed away in September.
Kruger "lifted up the most vulnerable and stigmatized people in our communities - particularly unhoused people living with addiction," according to a statement from District Attorney Larry Krasner.
"It was encouraging to see Josh join the Kenney administration as a spokesperson for the Office of Homeless Services, as an openly queer writer who wrote about his own journey surviving substance use disorder and homelessness," Krasner said.
"We will maintain close communication with the Philadelphia Police in their efforts to identify the responsible party or parties so that they can face legal consequences,” the district attorney stated, "just like we do with any homicide."
Kruger was the recipient of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Journalists' 2014 and 2015 newspaper commentary award.
