The 22-year-old charged in the Tampa shooting that killed 2 and injured 16

A 22-year-old Tampa, Florida, man was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after a shooting on a crowded street early Sunday morning killed two and injured 16.

After two groups argued as hundreds of people left Ybor City pubs and nightclubs at 3 a.m., the shooting began. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw stated a 14-year-old child and 22-year-old man died.

Bercaw said 15 of the 16 victims were shot and one had more critical injuries. Tampa police stated Tampa Fire Rescue triaged and transferred them to surrounding hospitals.

Many of the further patients, aged 18–27, have been hospitalized and released. Five are recovering in the hospital, the statement stated.

The shooting injured 18 individuals, police said. Bercaw said two died and 16 were hurt.

This weekend's Halloween celebrations saw many shootings nationwide.

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw announced Sunday afternoon that Tyrell Stephen Phillips faces second-degree murder with a firearm charges. Jail records show Phillips has no attorney.

After appealing Sunday morning, police received a “plethora” of leads and charged Phillips “because of the community coming forward and assisting us in this investigation,” Bercaw said.

Bercaw stated, “See something, say something applies to anywhere”. “You could be in a mall. A movie theater may be nearby. Possibly in Ybor. You must notify us promptly of any suspected activity.”

One of two firearms found at the scene was stolen, police said. They are investigating additional shooters.

State Attorney Suzy Lopez says her office is assisting law police in the Sunday incident.

“We will assist in the investigation and stand ready to vigorously prosecute anyone who resorts to senseless gun violence and harms our community,” Lopez stated Sunday afternoon.

This event may be gang-related, the police chief stated, “At this point, it is early in the investigation, so that will be part of our investigation.”
