Today, President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy inked a 10-year bilateral security agreement designed to bolster Ukraine's self-defense capabilities and deter future aggression.

"Our goal is to strengthen Ukraine's credible defense and deterrence capability for the long term," Biden said during remarks shortly after the signing.

Biden mentioned that the agreement also outlines the shared vision of both countries for achieving a "just peace."

"Today is a truly historic day. We have signed the strongest agreement between Ukraine and the US since our independence. This is an agreement on steps to guarantee sustainable peace and therefore it benefits everyone in the world because the Russian war in Ukraine is a real, real global threat," said Zelenskyy.

Under the terms of the pact, the U.S. and Ukraine will collaborate over the next decade to enhance Ukraine's defense and deterrence capabilities, boost its long-term combat sustainability, accelerate its integration into Euro-Atlantic structures, and ensure mutual consultation in case of a future Russian armed assault on Ukraine.

In addition to signing the bilateral security agreement and distributing proceeds from unlocked Russian assets to Ukraine, Biden stated that the G7 has taken a third "major step" in support of Ukraine by agreeing to sanction countries that support Russia's war efforts.
