A powerful magnitude 6.7 earthquake has struck the Philippines

On Friday, a strong underwater earthquake in the southern Philippines collapsed shopping center ceilings as shoppers shouted. No tsunami warning was issued, and no injuries were reported.

The USGS reported a magnitude 6.7 quake 15 miles from Burias in the southern tip of the Philippines. It was 48 miles deep, it said.

SM City General Santos and Robinsons GenSan announced temporary shutdown. No injuries were reported.

The presidential palace says President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered government agencies to protect earthquake victims.

The Philippines experiences regular earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic faults around the ocean.
