Pope Francis experienced a "sudden worsening of his respiratory condition" following a "isolated attack of bronchospasm" that prompted vomiting with inhalation, the Vatican said on Friday.

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, Pope Francis' respiratory condition worsened after an isolated bronchospasm. The Pontiff was quickly aspirated and started on non-invasive mechanical breathing, demonstrating a good reaction. He was always attentive and focused, and he complied with therapeutic procedures.

This afternoon, following a morning spent alternating between respiratory physiotherapy and chapel prayer, the Holy Father experienced an isolated episode of bronchospasm. This resulted in him vomiting, inhaling some, and a dramatic deterioration in his respiratory health.

The Holy Father was immediately exposed to bronchial aspiration (to clear his airways) and non-invasive mechanical breathing, which increased his oxygen levels.

He has always been vigilant and aware, and has cooperated with therapeutic therapies.

The Holy See Press Office issued this statement on Friday evening, when the Pope was still being treated for bilateral pneumonia at Rome's Gemelli Hospital. He was admitted on Friday, 14 February, due to a respiratory tract illness.

It will take about 24 to 48 hours to determine the Pope's clinical health after the solitary bronchospasm event.
