Following a fatal shooting in Brussels, the Belgium vs. Sweden soccer match is postponed
Two Swedes were killed in a shooting in central Brussels prior to kickoff on Monday, which resulted in the suspension of the soccer match between host Belgium and Sweden at halfway.
Following the stop of the European Championship qualifier, supporters stayed inside the King Baudouin stadium and yelled "All together, All together," with hundreds of fans from both teams also yelling "Sweden, Sweden!"
Around 3 miles (5 kilometers) separated the location of the incident from the match, which drew over 35,000 spectators. At the half, the scores were knotted at one.
"The UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden has been abandoned following a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels this evening, after consultation with the two teams and the local police authorities," UEFA stated.
The crisis center for Belgium requested that people refrain from making needless trips and elevated the threat level in Brussels and the surrounding area to the maximum.
The attack occurred more than an hour before the game, and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo suggested it was related to "terrorism." It was not immediately apparent whether the shooting was connected to the global controversy surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
