The US and Israel are debating a long-term strategy for Gaza, according to the Israeli ambassador

According to Ambassador Michael Herzog, Israel is talking with the US about the issue and planning for a long-term strategy for Gaza.

The Israeli ambassador to the US stated, in an interview with "Fox News Sunday," that Israel "positions that Palestinians will have to govern themselves," but he also hinted that the government would not support a role for the Palestinian Authority in its current form, echoing earlier statements made by the Israeli prime minister.

Our stance is that Palestinians must exercise self-governance. What will be the exact role of the Palestinian Authority (PA) remains to be seen, because everybody understands that the PA, in its current composition — they can hardly govern Ramallah. So, no, not Gaza," Herzog declared.

The ambassador stated that security is the top priority and that Israel has no interest in controlling or occupying Gaza.
