Sam Altman leaves his position as OpenAI's CEO

OpenAI announced Friday that CEO Sam Altman is resigning.

ChatGPT manufacturer OpenAI said the departure followed a board review.

"Mr. Altman's departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities," OpenAI said in a release. "The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI."

OpenAI stated its CTO, Mira Murati, will serve as interim CEO.

OpenAI, a non-profit founded in 2015, has gained popularity since ChatGPT was released a year ago. The chatbot has over 100 million weekly users, Altman stated this month.

The company has expanded significantly. According to The Information, OpenAI stood to earn over $1 billion in a year from its artificial intelligence products by October.

Microsoft announced a $10 billion OpenAI investment in January. Microsoft and OpenAI have been partners since a $1 billion investment four years ago. Microsoft's Bing offers ChatGPT.
