Mariah Carey says that her mother and sister died on the same day
Mariah Carey's mother Patricia and sister Alison died on the same day this weekend, according to a statement from the US diva.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend,” Carey said on Monday. "Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."
"I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time," the statement concluded.
The statement did not specify the reason of death for either her mother or sister.
Patricia Carey was reportedly 87 years old. Alison Carey, 63, was a resident of Coxsackie, New York.
Patricia Carey was a Juilliard trained opera soprano and voice coach. She married Mariah Carey's father, Alfred Roy, and they divorced when Mariah Carey was three years old. Roy died in 2002.
In her 2020 book, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the five-time Grammy Award-winning singer described her tumultuous connection with her mother as causing her "so much pain and confusion".
Carey, 55, stated that competition had come between them. Profession-related envy "comes with the territory of success, but when the person is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a tender age, it's particularly painful" , according to her.
However, she also expressed her profound affection for her mother, stating in the dedication: "To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I feel genuinely did the best she could. I will always do my best to adore you.
Carey's relationship with her older sister, Alison, 63, was similarly complicated.
Mariah Carey was reportedly estranged from her sister Alison Carey, who sued her in 2021 for intentional infliction of mental distress over some of the passages of her memoir.
Alison Carey alleged in her New York lawsuit that her younger sister exploited her book "to humiliate and embarrass" her.
According to online court documents, Mariah Carey never filed a legal response to the accusation.
Carey is regarded as one of the world's most successful vocalists.
Her holiday single, All I Want For Christmas Is You, is the best-selling Christmas song by a female artist in history.
She has the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits by a solo artist with 19 songs, has sold over 220 million albums worldwide, and has served as a judge on American Idol.
The "All I Want for Christmas Is You" singer is the mother of twins Moroccan and Monroe, 13, whom she shares with ex-husband Nick Cannon. Carey also has an elder brother named Morgan.
Carey is now in between legs of her Celebration of Mimi performance residency in Las Vegas. She recently posted on Instagram to celebrate the end of her summer tour.
The five-time Grammy winner plans to continue the show in January 2025.
