The Supreme Court lets the White House fight controversial social media posts
The Supreme Court ruled on Friday that it would indefinitely stay a lower court order restricting the Biden administration's efforts to combat controversial social media posts on topics such as COVID-19 and election security.
The justices said they would hear arguments in a lawsuit filed by Louisiana, Missouri, and other parties accusing administration officials of unconstitutionally suppressing conservative viewpoints. The new case adds to a term already rife with social media issues.
The emergency appeal from the Biden administration would have been denied by Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Clarence Thomas.
The order would have affected White House communications staffers, the FBI, and the US cybersecurity agency, among others. According to the lawsuit, they were among those who coerced changes in online content on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and other media platforms.
Notably, the companies are not named in the lawsuit.
