Trump threatens secondary tariffs on Russian oil if there if no deal on Ukraine

US President Donald Trump has stated that he is "pissed off" with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and has warned to slap secondary penalties on Russian oil if Moscow does not agree to a ceasefire to stop the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump's statements on Sunday reflected the White House's irritation with Russia's leadership as discussions to end the war in Ukraine continue without a clear breakthrough.
“If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russian’s fault – which it might not be – but if I think it was Russia’s fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on all oil coming out of Russia,” Trump told in an interview with NBC on Sunday.
Trump did not elaborate on how he would impose the secondary tariffs.
Moscow had no quick reaction to Trump's accusations. Russia has branded several Western sanctions and limitations "illegal" and intended for the West to gain an economic edge in its conflict with Russia.
The fresh threat to imports from nations that buy Russian oil comes as Trump prepares to put tariffs on goods from several of America's biggest trade partners on Wednesday. The president declared it "liberation day," but the plan has sparked market volatility and fear among businesses and governments throughout the world.
While Ukraine has agreed to American proposals for a complete 30-day ceasefire, Russia has rejected the idea, offering only a truce over energy infrastructure targets and marine operations in the Black Sea—and only if the West first relaxes sanctions on specific agricultural items.
Trump has already threatened Russia with more tariffs and sanctions if it refused to reach a compromise, but broadening the trade rhetoric to include customers of Russian oil in other nations will put additional pressure on Putin.
Trump did not offer a clear explanation of what the plan would involve. He said “anybody buying oil from Russia will not be able to sell their product, any product, not just oil, into the United States”, but also said there would be a “25 to 50-point tariff on all oil”.
Trump said Putin knows he is angry with him, but added he had “a very good relationship with him” and “the anger dissipates quickly … if he does the right thing”.
The US president added that he would slap “secondary tariffs” on Iran if they failed to make a deal on its nuclear programme, as he renewed his threat of “bombing” Tehran if they did not strike an agreement.
Last week, Trump announced a 25 percent secondary duty on US goods from any nation that buys Venezuelan oil or gas.
His comments on Sunday imply that he may take similar measures on US imports from countries that buy Russian oil, which could particularly hurt China and India.
