House rejects a GOP-led independent bill on Israel aid

On Tuesday, the House experienced a setback in passing a standalone aid package of $17.6 billion for Israel, encountering resistance from both Republican and Democratic leaders.

Due to opposition from members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, House Speaker Mike Johnson was compelled to present the bill using a procedure that mandates a two-thirds majority in the House for approval. This required significant support from Democrats, which he failed to secure.

President Joe Biden also issued a veto threat against the standalone Israel aid bill, expressing a preference for its inclusion in a broader national security package.

Assistance to Israel has been a part of bipartisan Senate legislation, which also includes aid to Ukraine and Taiwan, along with provisions addressing immigration and border issues. However, this bill is also facing challenges, primarily due to Republican opposition, and Johnson noted that House Republicans were not involved in the discussions leading to the standalone bill.
