More than three months after elections, the king of Thailand approves a new Cabinet
The King of Thailand has officially endorsed the members of a new Cabinet, allowing the Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin-led administration to enter office more than three months after the general election.
On August 22, the Parliament nominated Srettha, a member of the Pheu Thai party, as prime minister. He formerly held the position of prominent real estate developer until officially entering politics last year. He will now serve as finance minister.
Friday saw the royal endorsement from King Maha Vajiralongkorn.
A coalition created by the Move Forward party, which received the most seats in the May elections, was delayed because Parliament refused to support it. Its progressive platform upset conservative senators, who singled out its support for minimal modifications to the monarchy as the reason for rejecting it. As a result, it was unable to achieve a majority in a combined vote of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
