Israeli military conducts airstrikes on Iran

Jerusalem/Tehran — June 12, 2025 — The Israeli military launched airstrikes against Iran early Friday, targeting key elements of the country's nuclear infrastructure and long-range missile systems, according to a senior Israeli military official.
Described as a “preemptive, precise, and coordinated offensive,” the strikes hit dozens of targets across multiple locations in Iran, the official said during a press briefing. Israel confirmed the operation and declared a state of emergency early Friday local time.
“Following the State of Israel’s preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack on Israel and its civilian population is anticipated imminently,” said Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz in a statement.
The United States clarified it had no role in the operation. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the U.S. remains focused on protecting American personnel in the region. “We are not involved in strikes against Iran, and our top priority is safeguarding U.S. forces,” Rubio said. He added that Israel had informed Washington the strikes were necessary for its national defense.
“President Trump and the Administration have taken all necessary measures to protect American interests and maintain close coordination with regional allies. Let me be clear: Iran must not target U.S. personnel or facilities,” Rubio warned.
An Israeli security source said the initial wave of airstrikes targeted Iran’s top military leadership and senior nuclear scientists, adding that “the likelihood is increasing” that some were killed. Another source indicated that several high-ranking Israeli officials have been relocated to undisclosed secure sites in the wake of the operation, citing concerns over potential retaliation.
In response to the strikes, Iran has temporarily closed its airspace over the capital, Tehran, according to a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) issued by Iranian authorities.
