IDF says it found the "biggest Hamas tunnel" in Gaza

The IDF discovered “the biggest Hamas tunnel” in Gaza on Sunday, measuring four kilometers (2.5 miles).

According to the IDF, the tunnel, secured “a few weeks ago” but revealed to the public Sunday, is wide enough for a large vehicle, reaches 50 meters underground, and has electricity, ventilation, and communication systems.

According to the IDF, it ends 400 meters before the now-closed Erez Crossing on the northern Israeli-Gazan border. Erez was stormed on October 7.

The tunnel was Hamas' “strategic infrastructure” and would be destroyed, said the IDF.

The IDF claimed Sunday that Muhammad Sinwar, Yahya Sinwar's brother, built the tunnel system. The IDF offered no proof.

The IDF says it has found “hundreds of terror tunnel shafts throughout the Gaza Strip” and is “to locate and destroy dozens of attack tunnel routes.”

They store rockets and ammunition, smuggle goods from Egypt, launch attacks into Israel, and house Hamas command and control centers.

The Israeli military found a tunnel shaft at the enclave's largest hospital, Al-Shifa, last month. The IDF's claim of a hospital tunnel network hinges on its discovery.

Last month, Israeli forces raided Gaza's largest hospital, accusing Hamas of running a command center below it. Hamas and hospital officials say it's only been used for treatment.

Flooding could be increased to degrade the tunnel network if successful.
