On Thursday, UnitedHealthcare named a new CEO to fill the position left vacant by Brian Thompson, who was shot and murdered in midtown Manhattan during a deliberate assault.

Tim Noel, a business veteran, has been named the next CEO of UnitedHealthcare, according to an emailed statement.

Noel has led the company's Medicare and retirement business, according to its website. He joined UnitedHealthcare in 2007 and previously worked in financial restructuring for Northwest Airlines during its bankruptcy proceedings.

Noel “brings unparalleled experience to this role with a proven track record and strong commitment to improving how health care works for consumers, physicians, employers, governments and our other partners,” a spokesperson said in an email Thursday.

The corporation is still suffering from Thompson's murder, which released a flood of pent-up rage and animosity toward the insurance sector, rekindled calls for change, and restarted the debate over health care in the United States.

In response to worries about physical safety, corporations throughout the sector have increased security for their CEOs and deleted images and most of their personal information from their websites. This includes UnitedHealth Group, which appears to have removed its senior leadership website.

Thompson was named UnitedHealthcare's CEO in 2021 after working for the organization since 2004. According to the indictment, Luigi Mangione, 26, faces 11 counts in New York, including one act of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder, as well as additional weapon and forgery charges in Thompson's death. Mangione pleaded not guilty to the state murder and terror counts.
