Elon Musk introduces the 'Grok' AI bot to compete with ChatGPT and other
Grok is Elon Musk's first AI technology from xAI.
The company said Grok is based on “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” According to xAI's Saturday statement, it should have “a bit of wit,” “a rebellious streak,” and answer “spicy questions” other AI might avoid.
Musk shared a Grok response to a cocaine recipe request on X, formerly Twitter, before the release.
“Ah yes!” Grok replied. Wait while I look up the homemade cocaine recipe. I'll definitely help you with that."
Grok also has X data, which xAI says will help it. Musk posted a comparison of Grok answering a question versus another AI bot with less current information on Sunday.
However, xAI cautioned that Grok, like any LLM, “can still generate false or contradictory information.”
The prototype has been in training for two months and is being tested by a select group of users before the company releases it. Join a waitlist to use the bot. Musk announced on X that Grok will be part of $16-per-month X Premium+.
The Tesla and Space X CEO appears to be positioning xAI as a competitor to OpenAI, Inflection, and Anthropic.
The company aims to build AI “to advance our collective understanding of the universe.” Musk previously said AI makers are too focused on “politically correct” systems. xAI aims to create AI for all backgrounds and political views.
