3 people have been arrested and charged in connection with Liam Payne's death, according to Argentine officials
Argentina's public prosecutor said in a statement Thursday that three people were charged in connection with singer Liam Payne's death.
According to the prosecutor's statement, "illicit conduct was discovered from which three people were charged with the crimes of abandonment of a person followed by death, supply and facilitation of narcotics" during the course of the inquiry into Payne's death.
Argentina's National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office also announced Thursday that three people are under investigation for "abandonment of a person before a death, supply and facilitation of narcotics," including a hotel employee and a suspected drug dealer.
According to the statement, a hotel staffer is accused of giving Payne cocaine twice while he was there, and a third individual is accused of giving the singer narcotics twice while he was there on October 14.
According to the prosecutor's office, Payne had alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription depressive medication in his system in the final 72 hours prior to his death, according to toxicology findings.
Medical tests verified that the singer's injuries were "compatible with those caused by falling from a height," according to the prosecutor's office. The office stated that examinations ruled out injuries caused by others or by self-harm.
Prosecutors were informed by the forensic physicians who conducted the autopsy that self-harm and outside intervention were ruled out, and that his injuries were consistent with a fall from that height. Because Payne "did not adopt a reflex posture" to protect himself during the fall, they continued, "it can be inferred that he may have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness."
In addition, prosecutors examined Payne's cell phone's contents and examined over 800 hours of surveillance camera footage from the hotel and public roadways.
Authorities suspect the first person spent time with Payne "on a daily basis" while he was in Buenos Aires. "Abandonment of a person before a death and the supply and facilitation of narcotics" are the charges against the defendant.
According to the statement, the second suspect is a hotel worker who "must answer" for reportedly giving the singer cocaine "two occasions" while Payne was staying at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel. The third individual is accused of giving the artist drugs on October 14 and is thought by investigators to be a "narcotics supplier."
Payne's body was also given to his father, Geoff Payne, last weekend after the investigation.
After falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the 31-year-old British pop artist passed away on October 16.
