Taylor Wily, star of 'Hawaii Five-0' and 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall', dies at 56
Taylor Wily, formerly a sumo wrestler and notable actor in projects like the “Hawaii Five-0” reboot and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” passed away on Thursday at the age of 56. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Before venturing into acting, Wily was a sumo competitor known by the ring name "Sumo T."
His passing on June 20 was verified by Peter M. Lenkov, the executive producer of the Hawaii Five-0 reboot.
“I am devastated. Heartbroken. I’ll post some detailed feelings later. Just too hard right now,” he wrote, alongside of a picture with Wily, on June 20.
Born in Laie, Hawaii, Wily stood 6’2” and weighed 450 pounds. In 1987, he joined the Azumazeki stable in Japan, where sumo has been a revered national sport for centuries. Competing as Takamikuni, he won his first 14 bouts and became the first non-Japanese wrestler to claim a championship in the makushita division. After reaching the makushita 2 rank two years into his career, he decided not to continue in sumo due to knee issues.
Wily is survived by his wife, Halona, and two children.
