Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos has died at the age of 94
Long-serving Orioles owner Peter Angelos passed away on Saturday at the age of 94.
“Today, Peter G. Angelos passed away quietly at the age of 94,” the Orioles said in a statement. Mr. Angelos had been ill for several years.
“It was Mr. Angelos’ wish to have a private burial, and the family asks for understanding as they honor that request. Donations may be sent to charity in lieu of flowers.”
In light of Angelos' declining health in recent times, his sons John and Louis assumed control of the franchise.
John Angelos recently reached an agreement to sell the team to Carlyle Group Inc and its co-founder David Rubenstein for $1.725 billion, as reported by ESPN.
Upon completion of the sale, Rubenstein will acquire the entirety of the Angelos family’s shares in the Orioles, as per The Athletic.
The transaction is pending final approval from MLB owners.
Angelos had been the owner of the Orioles for over three decades, having acquired the team in 1993 for a then-record sum of $173 million.
Hailing from East Baltimore, Angelos amassed his wealth as a lawyer, notably securing over $1 billion in damages from asbestos companies during the 1990s, which reportedly earned him more than $300 million in commissions according to the Baltimore Sun.
