Two service personnel were murdered and a third was in "serious" condition when their vehicle crashed near the US-Mexico border in New Mexico, military authorities said Tuesday.

The accident occurred at mile marker 115 on New Mexico's Highway 9, near the Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station in Santa Teresa.

The region is roughly 13 miles north of El Paso and near the border.

The military personnel were "deployed in support of Joint Task Force Southern Border," according to the statement from the US Northern Command.

The reason of the collision near the border town of Santa Teresa, New Mexico, is being investigated, according to the task force's statement.

The military is keeping the service men' names until their next of kin is notified.

According to a statement from Joint Task Force Southern Border, the collision occurred about 8:50 a.m.

The service men were deployed to the task force, which centralized military authority along the border this year after President Donald Trump allocated funds from the defense budget to the mission.

In March, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directed about 3,000 active-duty troops to gather at the US-Mexico border as part of Trump's campaign to halt immigration and drug trafficking. According to the Defense Department, the forces consist of a Stryker brigade combat team and a general support aircraft battalion.
