Los Angeles major highway is closed due to fire

After a fire tore through the storage lots beneath a major highway close to downtown Los Angeles on Saturday, the roadway was shut down in both directions.

At an Interstate 10 overpass in an industrial zone, the fire sent towering flames into the night sky early on Saturday morning. By daybreak, the scene revealed twisted guardrails and blackened, chipped concrete.

In order to relieve congested traffic, the California Department of Transportation dispatched employees to inspect the highway and set up detours. According to authorities, the east-west Interstate 10 was closed close to downtown Los Angeles for at least 24 hours on Sunday. The fire's origin has not been made public.

According to the fire department, the fire destroyed wood pallets, trailers, and other items in storage lots on both sides of the road, but they were able to protect three nearby commercial buildings.

A fire that burned parked cars and damaged a support for high-tension power lines spread across 8 acres (3 hectares), or the equivalent of six football fields, and more than 160 firefighters from 26 companies responded to put out the fire.
