Biden to speak Wednesday regarding decision to withdraw his reelection run in 2024
President Joe Biden stated Wednesday evening that he would speak from the Oval Office about his plans in his first remarks since announcing Sunday that he would withdraw from the 2024 presidential election.
"Tomorrow evening at 8 PM ET, I will address the nation from the Oval Office on what lies ahead, and how I will finish the job for the American people," Biden posted on social media Tuesday.
After making the unexpected revelation on Sunday that he would not be running for reelection, Joe Biden quickly backed Vice President Kamala Harris.
“While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in the letter, posted on X. “I will speak to the Nation later this week in more detail about my decision.”
The news of Biden's withdrawal from the campaign has dominated headlines, but he hasn't made a public statement about it yet. Numerous Democrats applauded his choice and offered heartfelt congratulations, among them former President Barack Obama.
Harris, on the other hand, has already started his campaign. In order to secure delegates for the Chicago convention, which begins on August 19, Harris has been working hard. However, neither Biden nor anybody else has the authority to choose a replacement for the Democratic candidacy. On Tuesday, she will make her debut as a presidential candidate in Milwaukee.
After spending almost a week in seclusion at his Rehoboth Beach residence following his second COVID-19 bout, the president left Delaware just before 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. According to a letter from his doctor, Kevin O'Connor, published on Tuesday, Biden is currently testing negative for the virus and his symptoms have subsided.
A day after declaring he would withdraw from the race, Biden, who hasn't been seen in public since July 17, dropped into a campaign meeting on Monday to speak with staff and offer his support for Harris's attempt to unseat him.
