Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, was injured while traveling to Luxembourg with a congressional delegation and was admitted to the hospital, her office announced Friday.

"While traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation," spokesperson Ian Krager stated in a statement. "Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals."

Pelosi is “currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals. She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements to honor the courage of our servicemembers during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history,” Krager said, adding that Pelosi “looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon.”

The 84-year-old Pelosi resigned two years ago after 20 years as the House's Democratic leader, including two terms as speaker. In November, she was elected to a second term in Congress, representing her district in San Francisco. She is still a powerful member of the party and is known as speaker emerita.

Pelosi's accident occurs only days after Mitch McConnell, a veteran Senate GOP leader, stumbled and fell at the US Capitol, where he wounded his face and sprained his wrist.

Following a "minor cut to the face," McConnell was "cleared to resume his schedule," according to a statement released by the 82-year-old Republican from Kentucky on Tuesday.
