Hurricane Oscar makes landfall in the Bahamas and moves toward Cuba
Hurricane Oscar is projected to impact Cuba as a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday afternoon before veering sharply away from the Gulf of Mexico and into the Bahamas, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
As of 10 a.m. Sunday, the storm was 90 miles east-northeast of Guantanamo, Cuba, with winds gusting to 80 mph and heading west-southwest at 7 mph.
According to the National storm Center's current forecast, Oscar will approach the northern shore of Guantanamo as a Category 1 storm on Sunday afternoon, bringing severe rains, flooding, and possibly mudslides to eastern Cuba through Wednesday. Oscar is predicted to make landfall as a tropical storm in the Bahamas on Tuesday night.
Oscar formed on Saturday off the Bahamas coast and brushed over the Turks and Caicos islands to the south. The National Hurricane Center had previously described the storm as "tiny," but hurricane warnings were issued Sunday for the southeastern Bahamas and parts of Cuba.
The hurricane is not anticipated to acquire much intensity as it hits the Bahamas, forecasters said Sunday morning.
