Colombian landslides claim at least 34 lives

According to a statement released by the governor's office on Saturday, at least 34 persons have been officially declared deceased as a result of landslides in the northwest department of Chocó, Colombia.

According to the statement, 17 bodies have already been sent to Medellin for forensic analysis, and an additional 17 are anticipated to be moved.

“We are experiencing a very sad weekend for Chocó,” Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba Curi remarked. “Our people feel the pain of the victims. I will not rest until I make sure that all Chocoans have information about their relatives.”

Following a day of intense rainfall in the region, Colombia's Vice President Francia Marquez stated on X Friday that the landslides occurred on a road connecting the cities of Quibdó and Medellín.

Mudslides have killed people in Colombia in the past. When a mudslide swept through the city of Mocoa in 2017 due to intense rains, hundreds of people perished in a remote southern region of the nation.
