The Mexican president claims it's addressing Canada's increasing asylum petitions

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated on Tuesday that his administration is addressing Canada's complaint regarding the significant volume of asylum applications from Mexican citizens.

According to statistics from the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Commission, between January and September 2023, Mexicans filed the highest number of asylum applications, totaling 17,500, surpassing Haitians, who submitted just over 8,500 requests.

López Obrador remarked, "We are dealing with it, Prime Minister Trudeau raised this concern during our bilateral meeting in San Francisco, which took place at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum summit in November."

Trudeau recently mentioned that Ottawa is engaging in discussions with Mexico City to explore ways to decrease the influx of asylum applications from Mexicans. He also highlighted that some individuals receive assistance from organized crime groups to reach Canadian territory.
