Biden will meet with the president of Mexico on Friday to talk about migration
On Friday, President Joe Biden will meet with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on his penultimate day in San Francisco for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
The presidents will discuss "how we can continue to work together as partners to manage migration at our shared border and mobilize a hemispheric-wide response to this challenge," according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
Biden thanked the Mexican president for their cooperation in policing borders and allowing migrants to enter the country before their meeting.
I truly appreciate Mr. President and your team's cooperation and leadership in tackling this situation. I know it's hard "Biden and López Obrador told reporters.
López Obrador thanked Biden for legalizing migration.
In January, Biden and López Obrador met in Mexico City to discuss counternarcotics, economic integration, climate obligations, and "irregular migration," according to the White House.
"Their meeting builds upon 200 years of bilateral relations between the United States and Mexico, an enduring partnership that reflects our shared values and the cultural and familial bonds between our two countries," said the White House.
The meeting between Biden and López Obrador “is obviously going to be dominated by the one issue that has dominated U.S. diplomatic bandwidth with Mexico during the Biden administration, which is how to contain migration flows to the U.S.-Mexico border,” said former Mexican ambassador Arturo Sarukhan.
