The meeting between Biden and Xi is set for Wednesday
In the first meeting between the heads of the two largest economies in the world this year, Presidents Biden and Xi Jinping of China will meet on Wednesday in California to discuss trade, Taiwan, and the delicate relationship between the two countries.
Though talks continued right up until the summit's start on Saturday, the White House has been indicating for weeks that it expected Biden and Xi to meet outside of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in San Francisco.
They will talk about how to "continue to responsibly manage competition and work together where our interests align, particularly on transnational challenges that affect the international community," according to a statement from White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. They will also talk about the "continued importance of maintaining open lines of communication"
Xi will attend APEC from Tuesday to Friday at Biden's invitation and participate in the U.S.-China meeting, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced in a statement on Friday.
