A market attack in Germany left 5 people died and over 200 injured
On Saturday, German officials announced that the death toll from a car-ramming attack on a Christmas market in eastern Germany had increased to five, with more than 200 injured, including dozens in serious condition.
The automobile crashed 1,200 feet into a gathering of shoppers in a tight lane in Magdeburg, a city of around 240,000 people west of Berlin, on Friday night.
Nopens told reporters on Saturday that the victims included four adults and a nine-year-old youngster. He would not rule out further deaths owing to the severity of some of the injuries.
“The charges at the moment include five charges of homicide and 200 cases of attempted homicide and aggravated assault,” he said.
German media referred to the suspect as Taleb A., in accordance with German practice of concealing suspects' full names in criminal proceedings. When a journalist questioned Nopens if "Taleb" was the actual name during a news conference on Saturday, he confirmed it.
Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry issued a statement denouncing the incident once it was revealed that the suspect was a Saudi national.
The incident has fueled arguments in Germany regarding uncontrolled immigration as the country prepares for quick elections in February.
