Extensive police operations are currently ongoing at the Magdeburg Christmas market, which has been closed, according to authorities.
The German state premier acknowledged that two persons, including a toddler, were murdered in the incident.
He said he can't rule out further deaths owing to the horrific injuries some people have endured.
At least 60 individuals were hurt, he said.
The accused driver of the vehicle has also been apprehended. The individual that was detained is 50 years old and originally from Saudi Arabia.
He is said to have come in Germany in 2006 and worked as a doctor.
Police said they are not seeking for any further suspects at this time.
"My thoughts are with the victims and their families," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said. "We stand by their side and by the side of the people of Magdeburg. My thanks go to the dedicated rescue workers in these anxious hours."
