The humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza necessitates an immediate cease-fire, according to the UN Secretary-General
On Monday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres told reporters that Gaza is "becoming a graveyard for children" and that a humanitarian ceasefire is more urgently needed because of the enclave's worsening conditions.
“The nightmare in Gaza is more than a humanitarian crisis. The secretary-general told reporters at the UN in New York, "It is a crisis of humanity."
After making those remarks, Israel's UN ambassador, Gilad Erdan, demanded that Guterres step down and charged him with keeping quiet about the Israeli deaths in the Hamas attack on October 7.
On Monday, Erdan said on X, the platform that was formerly known as Twitter, 'it has been over 30 days since the children of southern Israel were intentionally slaughtered by Hamas terrorists, but you have said NOTHING about the 'graveyard of children' the south of Israel has become."
Echoing Erdan, Israel's Minister of Foreign Affairs Eli Cohen declared, "Israel's efforts to eradicate this terrorist organization are not the issue in Gaza; rather, Hamas is the problem."
Guterres continued by declaring that a $1.2 billion humanitarian appeal would be launched by the UN and its allies to aid all residents of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.
Reiterating his denunciation of the Hamas October 7 attacks, Guterres demanded the release of the hostages that the terrorist organization was holding.
