Target is restricting self-checkout to those with 10 items or less
On Thursday, the retailer announced adjustments to a significant aspect of the purchasing process - the checkout line. Target stated that customers opting for self-checkout would be restricted to a maximum of 10 items. Alternatively, they must use a human cashier for their purchases before exiting the stores.
Target's introduction of "Express Self-Checkout" lanes will roll out in stores starting Sunday across most of its 2,000 locations. This change follows a trial run of the program at 200 stores last autumn, during which self-checkout was observed to be twice as quick, according to the company.
Throughout the pandemic, Target and other retailers heavily invested in self-checkout alternatives to reduce human interaction, curb the spread of the virus, and cut down on labor expenses. Nonetheless, certain studies have indicated that self-checkout systems may lead to increased instances of customer theft.
