EU enacts groundbreaking AI legislation

The European Union passed a landmark AI bill Wednesday, leapfrogging the US again on the regulation of a key and disruptive technology.

The groundbreaking regulation will change how European firms and organizations employ AI for health care and policing. This bans some “unacceptable” uses of the technology and restricts others deemed “high-risk.”

It prohibits AI from interpreting emotions in schools and workplaces and some automated profiling to predict future criminality.

The bill also requires openness and other duties for “high-risk” AI usage, such as education, recruiting, and government services.

The rule would also compel disclosure for powerful, complex, and frequently used AI model providers like OpenAI.

Labeling all AI-generated deepfakes addresses concerns about manipulated media, disinformation, and electoral involvement.

The broad regulation, which will take effect in two years, shows how quickly EU authorities have responded to the rise of technologies like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
